Reasoning as to why Goodreads is giving Amazon the axe.
- For sale: baby shoes, never worn.
-Ernest Hemingway- Machine. Unexpectedly, I’d invented a time
-Alan Moore- Lie detector eyeglasses perfected: Civilization collapses.
-Richard Powers- The baby’s blood type? Human, mostly.
-Orson Scott Card- Longed for him….
I opened this link while I was browsing tags this morning, but I can’t remember who originally posted it.
Some of these are pretty awesome.
We got a BUNCH of new stuff in these past couple weeks, including a cart a few days ago that has loads of awesome things on it. All the new 2012 Maverick award winners are in! There’s some new Vampirates, a new Vampire Diaries, and two new Pretty Little Liars books on the cart as well. Come and get ‘em!
STAY HEALTHY EVERYONE ELSE.
We also saw Figment at ALA! In case you don’t recall my fabulous post about Figment, they are an awesome website for young writers that allows them to publish their work online, create cover art for their novels, work with others on literary projects, create writing and book clubs, and so many other amazing things. I told them we had just promoted their site and they were so excited, and gave us some free swag (always a plus). So go check them out! http://www.figment.com
Hello SPL teens and everyone else! What a quiet weekend it was for our tumblr. Anyway, four of us from SPL youth services went to the ALA Midwinter Conference here in Dallas this past Sunday, and it was AWESOME! We saw a lot of great things, and got a look at some of the cool new stuff the authors and publishers are putting out in the coming year.
ALSO, we got a look at the new poster for Insurgent, the crazily anticipated follow up to Veronica Roth’s Divergent. Here’s what it looks like in case you haven’t seen it yet!

So excited!!
Figment.com is a great website for young writers, new writers, up-and-coming writers to get their work out there! It’s filled with contests, challenges, forums, and a library of all their writer’s works, and it’s a great way to encourage those of us who need to get back into the habit of writing more. Check it out!
I know there’s a lot of pressure on high school students to pick majors, and even career paths, before they’re even juniors. Those last two years are pretty much testing and prepping for college admittance, and everyone wants to know that you have your whole life planned out already.
Try not to worry about it too much.
Your freshman year of college, and even your sophomore year, is all about taking those basic classes and giving yourself time to figure out what you really want to do with your life. As the article says, almost all college students have switched their majors three, even four times before they decide on one.
Here’s the link to Nia Green’s whole post on the subject. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/15/college-prep-how-do-you-p_n_1208123.html?ref=college&ir=College
Wanted: 50 former science majors with an interest in teaching — no experience, please — and a willingness to relocate. Must be comfortable sharing a classroom with dinosaur bones and giant squid.
This June, the American Museum of Natural History will introduce its first Master of Arts in teaching program, in which students with a background, if not a career, in science can spend 15 months learning to become earth science teachers.
Tuition is free, thanks to the New York State Board of Regents, and students will receive $30,000 stipends and health benefits.
“We’re looking for people who want to make a career of teaching and stay in the business,” said Ellen V. Futter, president of the museum, “whether they be just out of college or former participants in a volunteer corps or career changers or veterans.”

This is awesome! What a great opportunity.
Story from DC, but good lord Chicago, I’m patron 243 on the waiting list for Game of Thrones.
Same here. Especially since we’re just small town Texas. We still get so many requests and complaints about not having enough available ebooks.
In a surprise move today, Representative Eric Cantor(R-VA) announced that he will stop all action on SOPA, effectively killing the bill. This move was most likely due to several things. One of those things is that SOPA and PIPA met huge online protest against the bills. Another reason would be that the White House threatened to veto the bill if it had passed. However, it isn’t quite time yet to celebrate, as PIPA(the Senate’s version of SOPA) is still up for consideration.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day everyone! We’re still open over here at the Smith Public Library. Hope you’re all enjoying your free day, stop by and check out the displays we’ve got up for MLK! Maybe take the time to visit the website for the King Center, founded by Coretta Scott King as a lasting tribute to her husband’s work and legacy.

An especially excellent development when libraries are disappearing at such a frightening rate there.
I want to know how standardized testing has affected you. It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, student teacher, K-12 or college educator. The link above will take you to an open Google Doc where you can share your thoughts. If enough responses come in, I’ll follow-up with some highlights in a day or two.
Done and done.
